Spring Valley SanctuarySpring Valley is looking for eager volunteers to assist them in their conservation efforts at their grounds on Schaumburg Road.  All volunteers should come to the Vera Meineke Nature Center at 1111 E. Schaumburg Road on Saturdays, June 14.  Work will be done from 9-1 and volunteers are welcome during any of those hours.  Dress appropriately for work–especially your feet!



GREEN CLEANING AT HOME: A PROGRAM

Green cleanersThe Spring Valley Nature Club is happy to sponsor the second in a series of green/environmental programs.

What:  Green Cleaning At Home
When:  April 2, 2014 at 6:30 P.M.
Where:  Spring Valley Nature Center, 1111 E. Schaumburg Road, Schaumburg, IL

This free event will feature guest speaker Andrea Vollf who is a member of the Schaumburg Environmental Committee and principal of Sustainable Concepts.  She will talk about the benefits of green cleaning and how to create your own environmentally safe cleaning products at home.

Refreshments will be served.



HEIRLOOM VEGETABLE & HERB SALE

Heirloom vegetablesSpring will be here soon–it’s a promise!  In preparation, it’s time to start thinking about all of those wonderful plants you can’t wait to put in the ground.  And the Spring Valley Nature Club is here to help!

They will be holding an Heirloom Vegetable & Herb Sale as part of the Backyards for Nature Fair sponsored by Spring Valley.  These are the details you need to know:

  • You can find the order form here.
  • Make checks payable to Spring Valley Nature Club.
  • Send payment in care of Spring Valley, 1111 E. Schaumburg Road, Schaumburg, IL, 60194.
  • Mark envelope Nature Club Order Enclosed.
  • Preorder cutoff is April 15, 2014

What:  Going Green At Home
When:  March 5, 2014 at 6:30 p.m.

Aren’t you looking forward to the warm months with all of the vibrant beauty of the many blooming flowers?  Have you ever taken a walk through Spring Valley and appreciated not only the stillness of this far-from-remote spot but the many bits of nature that you don’t ordinarily see in your neighborhood?  If you’d like to experience the peacefulness and beauty of this local preserve all year long with the help of your computer, here’s your chance!

Beginning in March, Ed Tummillo invites you to subscribe to the Spring Valley Wildflower Blog.  As a nature photographer who has been taking pictures of the flora and fauna of Spring Valley for the last five years, Ed will keep you up to date on the blooming of the various wildflowers of the Sanctuary.  In subscribing to the blog you will be provided with:

  • Photos of the wildflowers throughout the blooming season
  • A weekly updated list of wildflowers that are currently in bloom or about to bloom at Spring Valley
  • Hints for identifying the different types of wildflowers
  • A detailed map showing the best locations in Spring Valley for viewing and photographing the wildflowers.
  • Recommendations for how and whent to photograph the flowers.
