Be a part of Earth Hour on March 28, 2009 by turning off your lights at 8:30 p.m. local time.
The World Wildlife Fund is asking individuals, businesses, governments and organizations around the world to turn off their lights for one hour – Earth Hour – to make a global statement of concern about climate change and to demonstrate commitment to finding solutions.
Last year, more than 2.7 million Chicagoland residents came together to turn off their lights for one hour – Earth Hour. And as landmarks, businesses, retailers, restaurants, hotels, schools, museums, parks, theater marquees and households turned off their lights for one hour, the Chicagoland region reported an electricity savings of 7 percent – the carbon emissions equivalent of taking 1 million cars off the road for one hour or planting 158 acres of trees.
You can make a statement by participating. For one hour, you can come to the dark side!

Lighting accounts for close to 20% of the average home’s electric bill. CFLs use up to 75% less energy than incandescent light bulbs and last up to 10 times longer. However, there are instances when CFLs are NOT the best option.
- In vibrating fixtures (i.e. ceiling fans, garage door openers) as vibration can cause the CFL to fail.
- In recessed lights as some fluorescent ballasts are unreliable in ambient temperatures over 120 degrees. This can sometimes be a problem in enclosed or recessed ceiling fixtures in the heat builds up.
- With a dimmer switch unless you buy a CFL designed especially for dimmers.
- In fixtures turned on/off frequently, as CFL bulbs work best if they are left on for over 15 minutes each time they are turned on. Frequently switching them on and off will shorten the life of the bulb.
